Herpes medications can last for multiple outbreaks

  • herpes
  • hsv1

Question:

"I have herpes simplex 1. Will I have to go to the doctor every time I have an outbreak?"

Response:

Thank you for your question. Your answer depends a lot on you.

There is no medical reason why you would need to visit your doctor every time you have an outbreak. The sores associated with herpes are not fatal and will go away on their own.

That being said, there are treatments available that can shorten the duration of your outbreak and decrease their frequency. Usually doctors are willing to prescribe large amounts of these medications with a lot of refills. This is so you will not need to visit them every time you have an outbreak.

Of course, if you do want to see your doctor every time you have an outbreak and that is economically feasible for you, you are free to do so.

The likely scenario is that you will only need to see your doctor once every few years, when your prescriptions run out of refills.

Remember to abstain from sexual activity during your outbreaks, as that is when you are the most contagious.
