"Is Herpes esophagitis contagious?"

Response:

Thank you for your question. Explaining what herpes esophagitis is and how it spreads will hopefully clear things up for a lot of people.

First of all, herpes esophagitis is not common in healthy people. It is mainly found in people who have weakened immune systems. Both HSV-1 and HSV-2 can lead to herpes esophagitis, although the majority of cases come from HSV-1 (oral herpes).

Since herpes esophagitis develops out of either form of herpes, what should be more concerning is that it is possible to contract either or both of those diseases from somebody who has herpes esophagitis.

To summarize, you cannot directly catch herpes esophagitis from an infected person, but you can get either oral herpes or genital herpes (or both) from somebody who has herpes esophagitis.
