Can A Virgin Contract A STD?

Question:

"I was wondering if it was possible to get a STD even if you and your partner are both virgins?"

- Anonymous

Response:

STDs are spread from infected individual to non infected individual through a variety of mechanisms, the most prominent of which being vaginal sex. Technically, an individual could potentially get an infection from oral sex and still consider themselves a virgin, and there are other non sexual ways to contract certain diseases. Herpes can pass from mother to child while STDs can pass from one needle user to the next. The likelihood of an individual abstaining from sex contracting a disease heavily depends on that individual's sexual activity levels (outside of penetrative sex).
